Novak Djokovic’s victory over Rafael Nadal in last night’s Australian Open men’s singles final delivered Nine a massive ratings win, although the audience was down on last year due to the lopsided result. An average of 1.589 million metro viewers saw Djokovic claiming a record seventh Australian Open championship, down on 2018’s 1.73 million which saw Roger Federer prevailing over Marin Cilic in five sets (also the final year’s of Seven’s Open telecast). It was also the lowest audience for AO men’s singles final since 2011.
Last night’s match peaked at 1.933 million metro viewers. In regional areas, the match averaged 496,000 and peaked at 670,000, giving a combined metro and regional audience of 2.085 million (average) and 2.603 million (peak).
I’m a Celebrity held up well against live tennis, but the BBL’s ratings slipped further, except towards the end of second innings when ratings spiked as some viewers switched over from the tennis on Nine.

Audience shares for the same night last year (network shares in brackets)
Seven 36.7% (42.8%)
Nine 19.1% (23.4%)
Ten 16.8% (19.4%) <- I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here premiered on this night
ABC 6.4% (9.5%)
SBS 3.7% (4.8%)

Married at First Sight has created history by beating arch-rival My Kitchen Rules on its launch night last night, helping Nine to win in primary shares. For the 10th season of the cooking competition show, Seven moved it forward to 7pm to arrest the ratings slide of recent years, instead MKR posted its lowest ever season premiere ratings, down 366,000 from last year’s launch audience of 1.182 million.
It’s the second biggest season launch in the history of MAFS, behind season 1 in May 2015 which had 1.134 million viewers. The reality relationship experiment series won the timeslot in all cities except Perth, and thumped MKR in all major demographics.
Seven won the night in network shares however thanks to live BBL on 7mate which took four of top 5 multichannel programs. The return of The Good Doctor also won its timeslot on the main channel.
10 will be happy with I’m a Celebrity holding up against the other reality shows.

For the second night, Married at First Sight thumped MKR, Nine won in primary shares and Seven won in network shares.
The new season of Hughesy We Have a Problem rated OK but its audience was down on last year’s debut figure of 623,000.

Decent night for Nine with Married at First Sight going back up and New Amsterdam enjoying a good start, helping Nine to a clear win in network shares. The only bad news for Nine is the low figures for the return of Talking Married, which fell outside the multichannel top 20 and down from last year’s 152,000
Both MKR and I’m a Celebrity slipped from Tuesday.
Undercurrent’s ratings could have been higher, but legal reasons prevented more widespread promotions via newspaper and radio etc.

With no MKR on Seven’s schedule, Married at First Sight and I’m a Celebrity dominated the night’s viewing, leaving BBL’s ratings in the doldrums yet again.
Nine easily won the night with MAFS and New Amsterdam holding most of Wednesday’s audiences.

Seven won the night thanks to the season premiere of BH&G and the BBL from Brisbane.
The FTA figures for the first ever cricket test in Canberra were lower than the opening day of the Gabba test, even though Australia dominated the day with Travis Head and Joe Burns posting a 308-run fourth wicket partnership.

Married at First Sight and the season premiere of 60 Minutes (featuring an interview with controversial tennis player Bernard Tomic) delivered Nine another easy win. 60 Minutes posted its biggest audience since October 2017 (1.058 million).
The poor form of the Scorchers continue to hurt BBL ratings in Perth, with the first innings (when the Scorchers batted against the Stars) outrated by Married at First Sight.
Good start for ABC/BBC co-produced drama The Cry against tough competition.
